Why playtime is important for both you and your dog?

There are many benefits to playing with your dog that start at an early age, as puppies use play to help them learn about the world around them, whether they are exploring their surroundings or beginning to understand boundaries and how to socialize with other humans and dogs. It is important to start interactive play young as this period of growth and development happens quickly and any bad behavior learned early on can be corrected.  During this time, you’ll notice that your puppy is not the most coordinated, however, with practice they’ll begin developing their motor skills, improving their confidence as they navigate new terrain. Almost immediately, they’ll begin running into other dogs where they can learn pack mentality and coordination; essentially how to play well with others. With your guidance, the consistent act of coordinated play will help you both build trust and understanding for each other.

Although young puppies always have the energy to play, playtime should still be encouraged as they mature and grow up.  As an adult it is just as important to not lose this practice because having interactive play as a constant routine is mutually beneficial for your bond and can help keep them stay physically and mentally sharp while giving them a much-needed energy release.  Let’s face it, we are busy as humans and often don’t have the time to constantly address our dog’s needs.  Downtime is unavoidable; however, your dog will need to burn off excess energy afterwards to keep them from acting up or being destructive. Making this a daily activity after you accomplish your human tasks is highly recommended as this one-on-one time allows you to give your dog attention and show them that you care. And who doesn’t want to have some fun throughout the day? The endorphins released during play will last throughout the day while a tiresome activity will help them rest easier later.

As your dog ages, their physical ability, interest in play, and overall activity level will change. However, consistent practice and some creativity to keep them enticed will help you and your dog continue socializing together and building a lasting bond.  Having the right tools to do this is essential whether it’s with new toys, games, or the occasional treat! At East Mission, we believe that toys must be functional for your dog, encouraging their instinctual needs, but must also speak to you as well. Remember, they rely on you to manage their daily activities so inspiring yourself to set the routine and go out and play is just as important.  Motivate yourself and captivate your dog’s senses by discovering our lineup of stylish new dog toys available here.  Find toys that you’ll both find interesting and then go out and have some fun!
